Roots of the J Hofstätter estate date back to the early 1900’s, when Josef and Maria Hofstätter began operating out of the Schwarzer Adler Inn’s humble cellar in the town of Tramin. Three generations later, under the expertise of Martin Foradori Hofstätter (son of Paolo Foardori, referred to as the father of Pinot Nero in Alto Adige), the winery has developed into the region’s largest family estate winery.

The winery’s success is due in large part to an unwavering commitment to exceptional vineyard sites, unchanged since early pioneering days. As Martin explains, “Early on, we made use of a gentle kind of vine pruning, minimized the interventions, and let healthy, strong grapevines grow”. A philosophy insisting that soil, climate and elevation all play important roles and should be reflected in finished wines, has contributed to the introduction of a distinct classification system for the estate’s most singular vineyard sites. The word ‘Vigna’ on J Hofstätter labels designates a single-vineyard wine made from grapes harvested from one precisely demarcated parcel.

With vineyard holdings on both the east and west sides of the Adige Valley, as well as the highly elevated Valle di Ronchi in Southern Trentino, the family has a diverse landscape to draw from. Vineyard elevations range from 800 – 2800 feet and soils vary from clay, gravel, sand and porphyry, to limestone and slate. This diversity coupled with an innovative spirit and uncompromising dedication to produce exquisite wine continues to set J Hofstätter apart from peers.
