Founded in 2016 by Ethan Joseph alongside his partners Josh Stecker, CJ Buzzy, and Tyler Mackelvey, Iapetus is a pioneering natural wine label from Shelburne, Vermont. Inspired by the ancient Iapetus Ocean that once covered the Champlain Valley, the winery is deeply connected to the region’s geologic and environmental heritage. Iapetus represents a new chapter in Vermont winemaking, emphasizing minimal intervention and sustainable practices.
Ethan Joseph, who has been with Shelburne Vineyard since 2008, envisioned Iapetus as a way to push boundaries with hybrid grape varieties that thrive in Vermont’s cold climate. Together, the team produces wines using organic methods, native yeast fermentation, and little manipulation, allowing each bottle to showcase the raw expression of Vermont terroir. Their approach reflects a balance between innovation and tradition, driven by the shared belief that wine should be a pure reflection of its environment. Each wine tells a story of the region’s ancient geology, transformed into something that is both timeless and refreshingly new.
