Maranges is the southernmost wine-producing commune of the Cote de Beaune in Burgundy, taking its name from the three villages within its catchment area: Cheilly-les-Maranges, Dezize-les-Maranges and Sampigny-les-Maranges. Based in the tiny village of Dezize-les-Maranges (less than 200 inhabitants and no village commerce other than winemakers!), the 10 hectare Domaine splits production 85/15% red/white. Gone are the days of heavy, hard tannic red wines from Maranges. Modern winemaking allows top winemakers like Charleux to produce more accessible, wines with more breadth and intensity without the interminable and often frustrating wait for tannins to soften. The whites are a revelation. Very few in number, they are quite unique and “terroir” driven.
