Bizkaiko Txakolina, Basque Country-The vineyards here are unique within the D.O. of Bizkaiko; the vines line the steep slopes of the Bakio valley that face toward the Atlantic Ocean. The centennial, pre-phylloxera vines are terraced on these slopes and farmed organically. They grow two types of grapes in their 12 hectares: Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza. Two of these hectares are dedicated to Hondarribi Beltza, the red txakolina grape. This small amount of grapes is put to use in something truly unique: red txakolina. Made from 100% Hondarribi Beltza, the Gorrondona Tinto Txakolina is a distinctive wine with aromas of green peppers, spices, and red fruit that are followed on the palate with flavors of crushed minerals with medium tannins that yield a light and refreshing finish.
